Prophets & Apostles Jeoparty! Great "SOCIAL" activity - Primary Activity Days

Need a fun way to learn about our Prophet and Apostles? Play Jeoparty! The idea is to give your youth an info sheet before the activity (maybe the Sunday before or even just right before you play the game)  and ask them to memorize as much information as they can. Using facts from the brethren's biography's on LDS.org, this info sheet has just a few bullet points so they can get to know them just a bit without being too overwhelmed.

I would also recommend printing this quote sheet on the back of the info sheet...

This game of Jeoparty has the following categories, and each of the questions come from the info sheet.

Where in the World - Questions about where they were born
Smarty Pants - Questions about their education
Called to Serve - Questions about their missions
Bring Home the Bacon - Questions about their careers
Wise Counsel - A missing word from their quote

Divide your group into two teams, and the team that has the most points at the end, WINS!

Holy Ghost Helps You - Learning and Living the Gospel

In the Faith in God Book under Learning and Living the Gospel, there is the following requirement:

Mark these verses about the Holy Ghost in your scriptures: John 14:16–17, 2 Nephi 32:5, and Moroni 10:5. Discuss ways the Holy Ghost helps you.

Since I’m pretty sure chocolate= happiness and the Holy Ghost is supposed to lead us to happiness, then an activity where the “Holy Ghost” helps us make brownies seems perfect :). Also I haven’t tried a recipe from Our Best Bites that I didn't love, so this should be a real treat!

Start the activity by passing out a recipe card with some blanks in it. The participants will get to fill this out as they try to listen to the “Holy Ghost”. This recipe card represents how we get a lot of direction in our lives through scriptures, church, prayer and so forth. This recipe card is an awesome start to knowing what to do, but we are going to need the help of the Holy Ghost to fill in the blanks.

Next, you'll want to have the "Holy Ghost Help You Cards" ready. Since there are 9 ingredient to the brownies, there are nine of these cards. This will give 9 participants an opportunity to pretend to a prophet and then pretend to be the Holy Ghost. The cards is a strip of paper folded in 3 so you can't see the ingredient when you pick it up, you just see the front side that looks like this:

When you flip it over, the participant is to read an exert about the Holy Ghost from LDS.org. They can pretend like they are a prophet and say it loudly for everyone to hear.

Next, the participant will want to turn their backs to the crowd and WHISPER in a still, small voice their ingredient. This is when everyone will try super hard to listen so they can fill out their ingredient card. Everyone should be quiet and there is no repeating or sharing answers. There will be a time for this at the end.

Once all 9 cards have been played, everyone should have their recipe cards filled out, but I imagine some ingredients were missed or written down incorrectly. Allow the participants to come together and with the help of the leader make sure their recipe is correct. Once everyone has a correct recipe, allow everyone into the kitchen to make the brownies!

If everyone brought their scriptures, while the brownies are baking would be a good time to mark them with the verses and maybe share personal stories of when the Holy Ghost helped them. Also pass out this handout for them to take home and hang up :)

I used this brownie recipe for the activity:
Perfect Chocolate Brownies
Recipe (with minimal adaptations) from Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito, Baked NYC and Baked: New Frontiers in Baking
1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsweetened Dutch Process cocoa powder
11 ounces dark chocolate, roughly chopped
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch chunks
optional: 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
5 eggs, at room temperature*
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Gospel Standards Trivia Game - Learning and Living the Gospel

Similar to Articles of Faith Trivia Game, this game is for learning My Gospel Standards. For this game you’ll want to split the group into two. Each group takes turns rolling a dice. When an EVEN number is rolled, the player may pick a “Trivia Card”. The trivia card has either a Gospel Standard or My Baptismal Covenant with a fill in the blank.  The player must read the whole card out loud for everyone to hear, and fill in the blank as they read it. Failure to read the whole card, with the correct missing word means they may not advance on the game board. If the player answers the trivia card correctly, they move forward the amount of spaces they rolled (either 2, 4 or 6). The first team to reach the end, WINS! You can get my files for this game HERE

In order to get the "Trivia Cards", you'll need to cut, fold and glue the printable:

Also print each player a cheat sheet that they can bring home after the activity and put them in their scriptures:

Scripture Drawing Telephone - Learning and Living the Gospel

Ever play the game where you say something into someone's ear, they whisper it to the next person and then after going all the way around a circle, you see where it ended up? This is kind of like that but with drawing pictures. After playing this quite a bit with my family, I thought this would be great for Activity Days using scripture centered words. To start, everyone needs to pick a word. I came up with 40 scripture-related words (like prayer, temple, family, fish, whale, Christmas, baptism, brass plates, prayer....)

Everyone will need a booklet (if you plan on playing multiple times, you'll want to print this page accordingly). This can be printed and then stapled together with the cover page on the front and the final guess page in the back. The player writes their name and secret word on the second page of the booklet and then at the same time, everyone passes the book to the next person in the circle. If you have more than 6 people, it won't end where it started, but that's okay. When the books are filled with guesses and drawings, show each of the pictures to everyone and see how the word evolved, it's usually pretty funny!

Articles of Faith Trivia Game - Spiritual Goal Development

Best way to learn anything is having fun! For this game you’ll want to split the group into two. Each group takes turns rolling a dice. When an EVEN number is rolled, the player may pick a “Trivia Card”. The trivia card has either an Article of Faith with a fill in the blank or an Article of Faith with “what’s the number” in which the player answers what article it is. The player must read the whole Article of Faith out loud for everyone to hear, and fill in the blank as they read it. Failure to read the whole article, with the correct missing word means they may not advance on the game board. If the player answers the trivia card correctly, they move forward the amount of spaces they rolled (either 2, 4 or 6). The first team to reach the end, WINS! You can get my files for this game HERE.

You'll also want to provide everyone with a cheat sheet, that they can take home with them after to work on passing off memorizing the Article of Faith.

BINGO - A Latter Day Saint Primary Game

Recently the Primary President asked for us as leaders to keep track of what requirements each girl has checked off. I racked my brain for the best way to do that... felt like it would make for a pretty boring activity if we spent the hour just going through everyone's Faith In God books (and that's even IF we could get all the girls to bring theirs!) We decided to make it into a Halloween Party. We invited all our girls to dress in their Halloween costume, we blew up some balloons, had some treats and some Halloween games.

I wanted a fun game to play for our Halloween party that was related to what we were doing. This Faith In God Bingo has all the requirements for the Faith In God award... making it a great way for the girls (or BOYS!) to review what it takes to get their award.

While most the girls were playing Bingo with one of the leaders, one girl at a time met with me so we could go through their book and I could update my tracking sheet (shown below). We went through each of the four categories, making sure the "Faith in God Achievement Record" at the end of their book was also updated. I had candy at my table, too ;)

After the Bingo game and once all the girl's books had been updated, we played a little gummy worm game. I put four gummy worms on a paper plate and covered the gummy worms with whipping cream. The first girl to finish finding and eating all four gummy worms, with their hands behind their back- WON. This was super fun and everyone's faces had whipping cream all over.

I figured this "Faith in God Bingo" could be great at just about any holiday party or activity, so I made them for Valentines, St Patrick's Day, Christmas and 4th of July as well. That way if anyone is looking for a quick, fun, but also very related to Faith in God activity... this is a great fit!

UPDATE!

I changed this a little to fit the new 2020 Personal Development program. The new cards good like this:

My Baptismal Covenants Fitness Camp - Physical Goal Activity - Easter

I love spring. Its finally warm enough to play outside! I wanted to make something that was a little more active, but with Easter coming up I also wanted to make something about our Savior.

Each Sunday when have an opportunity to reflect on Jesus Christ and we partake of the sacrament, we are renewing our baptismal covenants. By reviewing the Baptismal Covenant, we learn that it is a promise between us and the Lord and we can evaluate if we are doing what we covenanted to do  being a member of the church, taking upon His name, helping others, testifying of Christ, serving God and keeping his commandments. If we do our part, Heavenly Father will forgive our sins, poor his Spirit more abundantly upon us and redeem us.

This activity would fit great under a "physical goal" for the fitness activity, but also under Learning and Living the Gospel: Explain how taking the sacrament helps you renew your Baptismal Covenant. In a family home evening, teach others about things we can do to remain faithful.

Youll need a bag/sac/basket for each girl, 8 bowls and 8 pieces of Hersheys Nuggets (If you choose to use candy- you dont have to. If you are doing this around Easter time, you can use an Easter egg, or you can use chocolate AND an Easter eggs J).

There are eight stations. I made table tents for each station that you can just place on the ground or if youre in a backyard with furniture you can put them on chairs or tables. The table tents have the name and pictures for each exercise. You'll also have a bowl next to the table tent with the "missing word" chocolate nuggets/eggs/paper. One per participant.

The missing words are designed to wrap around a Hersheys nugget, but can also just be folded in half and/or placed in Easter Eggs.

Once everyone has all of their "missing words", they can use them to complete their very own "My Baptismal Covenants" handout. This handout is a great size to fit into scriptures after the activity.

Before they go home, give them this reminder, so they can complete the Family Home Evening part of the requirement.

My Body Is A Temple - Learning and Living the Gospel

First have everyone share what their favorite temple is and why.  Talk about how they felt if they've been to one, or what they remember if they have been lucky enough to go to an open house. Then you can explain to them that even though temples are all different, each is a House of God.

Share this scripture:  1 Corinthians 3:16–17 [1 Cor. 3:16–17]:
“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?“If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.”

Have the girls pick a charade card out of a bag or box and act out what is on the card for everyone else to guess. Once all the cards have been guessed, you'll have covered these principles on keeping our bodies like a temple (some of which are gospel standards)

Give each of the girls one of these hand-outs with the following quote:
Even though each temple looks different, all are beautiful and are built for the same purpose. They are buildings where special ordinances take place that are needed for us to return to Heavenly Father. You are like a temple. You are different from everyone else, but you too are a house for the Spirit of God—the Holy Ghost. Your body is a temple for your spirit.
 Vicki F. Matsumori
Also give them a "Future Temple Recommend" that they can sign their name to.
